In July we will be joined by Professor Claire Brock for our latest Dissecting the Author online event. Professor Brock will be discussing her book 'British Women Surgeons and their Patients, 1860-1918'. In September we will host 'Painting Legacies' in partnership with The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Discover how art and medicine come together in this online panel exploring portraiture, gender and representation.

In July, we will be joined by Artist Hannah Kelly for a Playful Portraits kids workshop.

Our Blood and Guts walking tours will continue with additional tours running on Fridays throughout the summer. We are delighted to be participating in the Edinburgh Deaf Festival with a BSL interpreted Blood and Guts walking tour in August.

Finally, both our Curator and Human Remains Conservator will be visiting the McDonald Road Library on the 11th of August to deliver two talks on the history of women in surgery.
Explore our latest exhibition which examines the history of medicine’s oldest specialty, ophthalmology. The study and treatment of eye diseases can be traced back to ancient Egypt and has a fascinating journey to the specialism we recognise today. The exhibition explores the complex workings of the human eye, the development of our understanding of eye disease and discoveries of new treatments.

Traditionally women naturally took on the role of safely delivering a baby, the new 'medicalised' model saw the rise of the male midwife from around the 18th century. The exhibition highlights Edinburgh's contribution to the development of the profession and how this has evolved into modern practices.

The exhibition is included in standard museum price and will close Easter 2024.

It explores how the perception of childbirth changed from being simply a life event unto something requiring medical oversight. Traditionally women naturally took on the role of safely delivering a baby, the new 'medicalised' model saw the rise of the male midwife from around the 18th century. The exhibition highlights Edinburgh's contribution to the development of the profession and how this has evolved into modern practices.

Our current temporary exhibition Beyond Skin & Muscle: the art and science of medical illustration will end on Sunday the 26th of March.

Referred to as the ‘grandfather of plastic surgery’ Gillies dedicated himself to restoring the faces - and the identities - of a brutalized generation. "The Facemaker" places Gillies's ingenious surgical innovations alongside the poignant stories of soldiers whose lives were wrecked and repaired. During the workshop you will be introduced to various specimens which have suffered disease. You will develop your observational and recording skills using pen and ink, graphite powder and pencil. Here we focus on accuracy whilst producing drawings in the style of both classical and medical artists of the past. Attendees will study and recreate some of the beautifully preserved specimens held at Surgeons’ Hall Museum.

December

1st- Surgeons' Hall Book Club: Spare Parts

Taking place in the beautiful surroundings of the Fellows Library, in the A Listed William Playfair building. The Museums second book club session will discuss 'Spare Parts' by Paul Craddock. We are fortunate to have Paul host the book club, alongside our Museum's Human Remains Conservator, Cat Irving, who will be discussing the book in relation to things in the museum. Expertly weaving together philosophy, science and cultural history, Spare Parts explores how transplant surgery has constantly tested the boundaries between human, animal, and machine. It shows us that the history -- and future -- of transplant surgery is tied up with questions not only about who we are, but also what we are, and what we might become

The work of a talented artist and nurse who sadly died following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is being celebrated as part of a charity art exhibition which launches today to help raise funds for MND Charity, the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Spearheaded by the College’s Director of Heritage, Chris Henry, the exhibition features beautiful pieces of art and prints created by Sandie Youngson throughout her years as a self-taught artist.

Before her passing earlier this year, grandmother-of-eight Sandie, from Aberdeenshire, had worked as an artist and was a former Macmillan nurse who ran classes for terminally ill cancer patients whilst encouraging the therapeutic quality of painting.

During her fight with MND, although no longer able to paint, Sandie still gained and gave enormous pleasure in sharing her paintings with loved ones and all of those who came to enjoy her exhibitions.

Her husband, former RCSEd Vice President and council member George Youngson, is also helping to launch the event at the College’s Surgeons’ Hall Museums in Edinburgh. The retired paediatric surgeon said:

My wife’s remarkable artistic practice had a huge impact on the many people she worked with, and the College is doing Sandie a great honour in showcasing this exhibition of her art. Much of her generosity included donating her work to charities. Therefore, our family have chosen My Name’5 Doddie as the beneficiary of an exhibition of her paintings being held in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Sandie’s courage and spirit in coping with MND is well reflected in the charity’s founder Doddie, his family and his team of supporters. The foundation has shown the leadership and advocacy in promoting awareness and exploring new treatments that are so desperately needed in an illness that has been so difficult to make progress on. I’m enormously grateful to the College for allowing us to show Sandie’s paintings. If she could have known that her art could provide pleasure for some, at the same time supporting research into this awful condition, then she would have been thrilled.

The exhibition includes prints and cards featuring Sandie’s distinctive seascapes, beach scenes, and colourful landscape paintings.

Sandie, who was also a mother-of-three, was inspired mainly by memories of her childhood and depicted growing up along the Scottish coastlines.

Jill Douglas, CEO of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation commented:

Thank you to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Youngson family for their generosity in supporting the work of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation with this wonderful event. Sandie’s story has moved everyone at the Foundation and we’re so pleased that her beautiful artwork is being exhibited. Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is not incurable, it’s just underfunded, and events like this will help our fundraising efforts as we continue to invest in targeted MND research and support patients living with MND.

Support the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation by making a donation or purchasing a print/postcard here.

A painting created during lockdown which celebrates the NHS has gone on display at Surgeons’ Hall Museums in Edinburgh. “Trauma” was created by Dundee based artist and trainee trauma and orthopaedic surgeon Alastair Faulkner.

For several years Faulkner had wanted to create a painting that showcased the different roles involved in delivering patient care within his specialty. In 2020, Faulkner decided to push ahead with his idea and put the idea to some of his colleagues at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. After approaching several of his colleagues, Faulkner started working on the composition of the painting. The team took part in a photoshoot which took inspiration from historical paintings such as “Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp”. However shortly after, the world was hit with the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the painting to take on a new significance. Faulkner was separated from his loved ones and was only able to see his colleagues at work. He considers the painting to be a record of the unprecedented times we were living in.

Trauma depicts a scene illustrating the multi-disciplinary trauma and orthopaedic team surrounding a patient lying on an operating table about to undergo hip surgery. The figures hold items to signify their roles within the team and their gazes are cantered on the patient directing their focus of care. The skeleton in the background represents orthopaedics and the shrouded figure in the Personal protective Equipment (PPE) to the right of the canvas represents the COVID-19 pandemic when this painting was created.

Faulkner states “I am immensely honoured and proud that this painting which has resonated with so many, and holds a huge personal significance is being displayed at Surgeons Hall to be seen by members of the public.”

The painting has been featured in the online exhibition “Healthcare Heroes” organised by Paintings in Hospitals and in the book “Portraits for the NHS Heroes” published by Bloomsbury.

“Trauma” is currently on display at Surgeons’ Hall Museums, Edinburgh.

Body Voyager is a unique experience that charts the history and use of robotics in surgery. The galleries incorporate a high level of interactive computer technology, working surgical instruments, human specimens and AV presentations to create an immersive experience. Visitors will be taken on a journey through the human body exploring the way in which modern technology is changing the course of modern surgery and patient care. The galleries aim to get visitors thinking about how the surgical world is advancing and how they would feel about receiving treatment via these technological advancements.

Body Voyager is split into four zones: an introduction, the head, the torso and the limbs. Each area looks at the extent to which robotics has been introduced into certain procedures already, as well as charting the development of robotic equipment.

Visitors will get the opportunity to use one of the most advanced pieces of robotic equipment in the surgical world for themselves. Intuitive Surgical Inc have kindly donated a da Vinci Surgeon Console with a bespoke programme that will allow users to experience what it is like to use the equipment for themselves.

Alongside the da Vinci there are several other interactives which will show visitors the benefits of computer assisted surgery. There has also been an app developed for the galleries which will allow visitors to learn more about the robots on display the galleries.

Director of Heritage, Chris Henry said: ‘This new gallery places Surgeons Hall Museums at the cutting edge of the display and interpretation. The use of robotics in modern surgery is already commonplace but no UK museum has explored how it has been and is being used today,’

Visitors to one of Scotland’s oldest museums can participate in a da Vinci Surgical console and simulation experience, at the “Body Voyager” exhibition.

From the 11th of September visitors to Edinburgh’s Surgeons’ Hall Museums will have the opportunity to see an innovative surgical robot up close. The da Vinci surgical system has arrived at the museum as part of its new Body Voyager exhibition, which takes visitors on a journey through the human body to explore how technology is changing the face of healthcare.

The da Vinci system was donated to the museum by Intuitive Surgical, the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery that has more than 6,000 systems installed globally, including 20 years of innovation history in the UK.

The da Vinci systems are used by surgeons to carry out operations using a minimally invasive approach that may improve patient outcomes. The system will be a focal point in the new galleries and visitors to Body Voyager will be able to experience what the surgeon experiences during a robotic-assisted procedure.

Chris Henry, Director of Heritage at the Museum said: “Our Body Voyager Galleries will look at the future of surgery and try to address changes that have taken place in recent years. The da Vinci surgical system is a fantastic addition to the galleries and will give visitors a unique opportunity to operate one of the most advanced pieces of surgical equipment currently available.”
Body Voyager will take visitors through the human body exploring the way in which modern technology is changing the course of modern surgery and patient care. A high level of interactive computer technology, working surgical instruments, human specimens and AV presentations will create an immersive experience.

Visitors will enjoy an interactive art-based programme designed specifically for Body Voyager to enable them to see what surgeons experience when operating the robotic-assisted da Vinci system.

“We’re delighted to help make such a ground-breaking new exhibition possible at the renowned Surgeon’s Hall Museum,” said Dr. Catherine Mohr, president of the Intuitive Foundation. “With da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery being used increasingly throughout the UK to transform the lives of patients, we hope this exhibition will help educate and inspire the next generation of surgeons and innovators.”

David Marante, Regional Director of Intuitive in the UK and Ireland, said: “By giving museum visitors this hands-on experience of our da Vinci surgical system we hope to help them understand the value of da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery for patients and how we develop our technology with surgeons to enhance patient care.”

The new permanent galleries are the second phase of the museum redevelopment. Phase one was completed in 2015 when the museum underwent a £4.4 million Heritage Lottery funded refurbishment. The museum’s collections chart the development of anatomical medical knowledge between the 16th and 19th centuries and deal with subjects such as the history of surgery, techniques and technology, surgical specialty, anatomy and a host of other themed subjects.

Surgeons' Hall Museums are thrilled to announce their new Body Voyager galleries will formally open on the 11th of September!

Currently the galleries at Surgeons’ Hall, one of the oldest museums in Scotland, chart the history of surgery from 1505. Body Voyager will explore the rise in computerised and robotic technology in medicine throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

The project has been in development for a couple of years and was due to open in September 2020 however, it was put on hold due to the pandemic. Body Voyager will be split into four different zones: an introduction, the head, the torso and the limbs. Each area will look at the extent to which robotics has been introduced into certain procedures already and how this equipment has evolved in recent years.

The galleries will incorporate a high level of interactive computer technology, working surgical instruments, human specimens and AV presentations to create an immersive experience. The Body Voyager galleries will take visitors on a journey through the human body exploring the way in which modern technology is changing the course of modern surgery and patient care.

Surgeons’ Hall have been working with a number of surgical companies including Intuitive Surgical Inc, Freehand Surgical and Bbraun to showcase some equipment used by surgeons, from the first pieces of robotic equipment used in the operating theatre to some of the most up to date, high tech instruments in use today.

Visitors will take an immersive journey through the human body in a new virtual reality experience. The galleries will pose many questions for visitors to consider: Will technology improve patient safety? Would you like to be operated on by a robot? Will the surgeon of the future be a data programmer? Will these changes ever replace the surgeon?

There will be a soft opening of the galleries in August before the galleries formally open on the 11th of September.

We are delighted to announce we have been awarded £60,000 from Museum Galleries Scotland's museum development fund. The funding will support the development of our new Body Voyager Galleries, which are set to open later this year.

The new galleries are the second phase of the museum redevelopment, with phase one being completed in 2015 when the Museums underwent a £4.4 million Heritage Lottery funded revamp.

Currently the Museums collections chart the development of anatomical medical knowledge between the 16th and 19th centuries and deal with subjects such as the history of surgery, techniques and technology, surgical specialty, anatomy and a host of other themed subjects.

Body Voyager, and will explore the rise in computerised and robotic technology in medicine. The new space will incorporate a high level of interactive computer technology, working surgical instruments, human specimens and AV presentations to create an immersive experience.

Body Voyager will be an immersive experience and will take visitors on a journey through the human body exploring the way in which modern technology is changing the course of modern surgery and patient care. Visitors will be asked to think more about the advancement of surgery and how they would feel as a patient in these circumstances.
