Horse Hair Ligatures

Surgeons use ligatures to tie off blood vessels during surgery to stop them from bleeding. These ligatures date from the late 19th century and are made from horse hair. The fineness of the hair made it useful for both sutures and ligatures. The hair was sterilized and sold in rolls of 100.
