Finger with Gout

This month we look at a finger with gout, a condition historically associated with the excesses of food and drink, but one we now know to be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, gender, diet and environment. Gout is the deposit of uric acid crystals around the joints and is said to be "... one of the most painful acute conditions that human beings can experience..” This finger shows these crystals (light yellow) in the soft tissue around the knuckle joint.
