Prostate

The prostate, only found in men, is usually about the size of a walnut and produces the fluid that mixes with sperm to make semen. In this specimen from a 55 year old man, it has become enlarged, projecting into the bladder. As it increased in size, it put pressure on the urethra which would have made it difficult to urinate and the walls of the bladder have thickened from the prolonged blockage.
This specimen was collected by Charles Bell in the 1820s and can be found in the Bell case behind the Dissection Theatre.
