James Douglas, 4th Duke of Hamilton (1658-1712), 1703

The Duke of Hamilton was made an Honorary Member of the Incorporation in 1700. He had been educated at Glasgow University and was appointed gentleman of the bedchamber to Kings Charles II. Following a year imprisoned in the Tower of London he returned to Scotland and took his seat in the Scottish Parliament where he opposed the Treaty of Union between Scotland and England. He died along with his opponent, in a duel in1712.
