Body Voyager Now Open!

13 September 2021
Our brand new permanent Body Voyager galleries are now open!

Gallery View 2

Body Voyager is a unique experience that charts the history and use of robotics in surgery. The galleries incorporate a high level of interactive computer technology, working surgical instruments, human specimens and AV presentations to create an immersive experience. Visitors will be taken on a journey through the human body exploring the way in which modern technology is changing the course of modern surgery and patient care. The galleries aim to get visitors thinking about how the surgical world is advancing and how they would feel about receiving treatment via these technological advancements.
Body Voyager is split into four zones: an introduction, the head, the torso and the limbs. Each area looks at the extent to which robotics has been introduced into certain procedures already, as well as charting the development of robotic equipment.
Visitors will get the opportunity to use one of the most advanced pieces of robotic equipment in the surgical world for themselves. Intuitive Surgical Inc have kindly donated a da Vinci Surgeon Console with a bespoke programme that will allow users to experience what it is like to use the equipment for themselves.
Alongside the da Vinci there are several other interactives which will show visitors the benefits of computer assisted surgery. There has also been an app developed for the galleries which will allow visitors to learn more about the robots on display the galleries.
Director of Heritage, Chris Henry said: ‘This new gallery places Surgeons Hall Museums at the cutting edge of the display and interpretation. The use of robotics in modern surgery is already commonplace but no UK museum has explored how it has been and is being used today,’
