SOLD OUT

This workshop is open to all over 18, and you don't need prior knowledge of medicine to try your hand at anatomical casting and dissection.

From the eighteenth-century dissection and anatomical modelling have been key to learning about anatomy and pathology. In this two part, hands-on workshop you will get the chance to try both heart casting and dissection.

Human Remains Conservator Cat Irving will lead the group in the process of casting a lamb's heart with either plaster or wax, which you can take home afterward. Along the way, you'll learn about the history of these models and their significance within Surgeons’ Hall’s Collection.

Learning Officer Carl Ronan and Museum Research Fellow Professor Ken Donaldson will then guide the group as they take a hands-on look at the structure and function of the mammalian heart. Using a pig heart, participants will dissect out the path of the blood revealing the chambers and their associated vessels and valves. We will discuss the function of each intricate part of the heart and what happens when it goes wrong.
