Surgeons' Hall Museums and RCSEd Library and Archives to participate in Rare Books Edinburgh Festival

26 February 2019
Surgeons' Hall Museums and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Library and Archives are proud to be participating in Rare Books Edinburgh. We will be hosting the following events as part of the 10 day long festival:

A-Z An Alphabetical Journey- Journal Making Workshop
23rd March 2019, 11.30am-4pm

A-Z an Alphabetical Journey- Journal Making Workshop

Join Surgeons' Hall Museums and artist Susie Wilson for this journal making workshop inspired by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's archive collections from the Scottish Women's Hospitals. The Scottish Women's Hospitals journal on temporary display at Surgeons' Hall Museums captures life at the camp in Ostrovo, Serbia. The journal is full of stories, poems, drawings and above all an abundance of humour.  Two A-Z pieces from this journal will be used as the starting point to make a unique book. Attendees will create their own alphabetical description of the museum using drawing, printmaking, collage and text and then will make a simple book. Tickets available here.

'Gray's Anatomy' with Dr. Ruth Richardson
25th March 2019, 7pm

Grays Anatomy Dr Richardson

First published in 1858 and now in its 41st edition, Gray's Anatomy has long been regarded as one of the most influential textbooks on the subject.

As part of Rare Books Edinburgh, The Library and Archive of the Royal College of Surgeons' of Edinburgh are delighted to welcome Dr Ruth Richardson, whose 2008 book. '"The Making of Mr. Gray's Anatomy" is a fascinating study capturing every detail of the creation of the book, and the individuals who made it happen. Dr Richardson also wrote the introduction for the 150th anniversary of Gray's Anatomy in 2008. Tickets available here.

Gray's Anatomy First Edition Publisher Proofs
Available to view online from the 20th to 30th of March 2019.

Join RCSEd Library and Archive for their first ever digital event!

Our digitised proofs of the first edition of Gray's Anatomy will be made available to the public to view online for the first time. This unique manuscript was supplied to Henry Gray for approval before publication in 1858, and bears his edits throughout. We are sure this will prove fascinating not just to historians of anatomy and surgery or book publishing, but also those interested in the fraught relationship between anatomist Henry Gray and medical illustrator Henry Vandyke Carter, who produced the 360 meticulous illustrations to support Gray's text.

The publisher proofs will be made available on RCSEd Library and Archive's digital collections website for the duration of Rare Books Edinburgh
