Move to The Serenity Café

On 1^st June, Words and Deeds, Weapons and Wounding opened at The Serenity Café at The Tun on Holyrood Road. We are delighted to be working with The Serenity Cafe, a community for recovery which is open to all, and The Women in Recovery Group.  The exhibition shows the courage, skill and determination of the, often forgotten, women in warfare. The achievements of women in history and the empowerment and inspiration that their stories can provide to women, and to everyone, becomes more apparent with each venue we visit. We especially want to take this exhibition and activity programme to women so we can explore our place in the history of caregiving in warfare, understand the constant challenges faced by women and celebrate their achievements. As the exhibition and activity programme features the story of the Scottish Women’s Hospital it is particularly pertinent to women of Edinburgh and we are looking forward to working with The Women in Recovery Group.

The venues for so have included Craigmillar Library, The Willow Project and Stockbridge Library, and have included a series of talks and activities including ‘Bandage the Spitfire Woman’, ‘Letters home (a bookmaking class) and talks on Mary Seacole, The Scottish Women’s Hospital and Elise Inglis. Later in the year, the exhibition will be going to Edinburgh Central Library, St Giles Cathedral, Napier University and Kirkcaldy Museums.

Words and Deeds was funded by the University of Edinburgh, Weapons and Wounding was funded by Surgeons’ Hall Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
