Digital Event: Gray's Anatomy Final Page Proofs

Date(s): 20 March 2019 - 30 March 2019

grays online

For this year's Rare Books Edinburgh, The Royal College of Surgeon's of Edinburgh Library and Archive are hosting events to dissect the most famous student manual of human anatomy, Gray's Anatomy (originally published as Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical). In addition to a public lecture by historian Dr. Ruth Richardson, author of The Making of Mr Gray's Anatomy, we will be hosting a digital event to coincide with the recent launch of RCSEd Library and Archive's Digital Collection's website, where their historic collections are now available.

Our digitised proofs of the first edition of Gray's Anatomy will be made available for the public for the first time. This unique manuscript was supplied to Henry Gray for approval before publication in 1858, and bears his edits throughout. We are sure this will prove fascinating not just to historians of anatomy and surgery or book publishing, but also those who are interested in the fraught relationship between Henry Gray and medical illustrator Henry Vandyke Carter, who produced the 360 meticulous illustartions to support Gray's text. To find out more, please do join us for Rare Books Edinburgh either online  or in person.
