We are delighted to intorduce the first in our 2019 #SpeakToTheSpecialist series. #SpeakToTheSpecialist is a series of intimate talks delivered by the specialists that work behind the scenes at Surgeons' Hall Museums.

Join the artists behind Surgeons' Hall Museums new temporary exhibition 'Field Notes: Reflections on Camp Life at the Scottish Women's Hospitals' for an informal discussion on the inspiration behind their work, inspired by material held in The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Archives, Joan Smith and Susie Wilson have created an exhibition that highlights the incredible story of the Scottish Women's Hospitals through a new medium. Starting in the gallery, both artists will explain how each responded to material from the museum's archive and how they have used the lantern slides and journals to inform the work on display.

The Scottish Women's Hospitals (SWH) were formed by Elsie Inglis after her offer of a ready-made medical unit staffed by women was turned down by the Royal Army Medical Corp. After the French government accepted her offer, 14 units of women volunteers left the safety and comfort of their own homes to help soldiers of all nations on the front line of allied countries such as Serbia and France during the First World War.

The talk will last about 60 minutes and there will be a chance to ask the artists questions. Following the talk, the museums will be open for viewing until 9pm for ticket holders only.
