Leather Binding Workshop

As part of Rare Books Edinburgh 2018 we are delighted to offer this evening book binding workshop and Library visit.

The evening will start with a visit to RCSED library where some of our rarest books will be on display including a 1460 “Book of Hours”, and a superb copy of “The Nuremberg Chronicle” from 1493, as well as unique medical texts such as Henry Gray’s handwritten annotations on the first edition proof of “Gray’s Anatomy” .

Participants will then move onto a practical book binding workshop with artist Susie Wilson where they will learn to make at least one  soft-cover leather book that can be used as a journal or a sketchbook.  Each student will create a book with a leather cover that features exposed, decorative stitching on its spine and pages that lay completely flat when open.  The book will feature a wrap-around leather strap to keep the book closed.

The class will also include an introduction to the world of handmade books. You'll learn the fundamentals of bookbinding, including proper techniques for folding, tearing, cutting, and stitching using traditional binding tools.
