The Sick Rose is a strangely fascinating, often gruesome visual tour through disease in an age before colour photography. The illustrations produced for 19th century medical books were created through a sophisticated collaboration between doctors, artists, craftsmen and publishers, and chronicle a major attempt to record, understand and treat the symptoms of disease at every stage.

Richard Barnett’s  evocative overview of ailments, ranging from those that are largely forgotten to epidemics that shaped our modern age, are a reminder of the transience of the body and the frailty of the flesh. But they also represent the overwhelming need to understand human diseases and to heal.

The Sick Rose is published in association with Wellcome Collection
