When Elsie Inglis offered a 100 bed hospital unit staffed by women to be deployed anywhere in the war zone, she was told to ‘go home and sit still’. This talk tells the story of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals and the remarkable women who braved deprivation, disease and war to provide a high standard of care to the wounded in Serbia, Russia and the Western Front. The courage and tenacity of their doctors, nurses, orderlies, drivers, cooks and administrators won them the respect of civilians and the military. Furthermore, their work and reputation influenced post-war legislation which is still relevant to today’s society.
