This talk explores the relationship between the surgeon Joseph Bell and his student Arthur Conan Doyle; and how it was Bell's diagnostic and teaching techniques that led to the creation of Sherlock Holmes. The lecture also deals with the discovery of the Joseph Bell archive, which contains the letter crediting Bell as the inspiration for the character of Sherlock Holmes.
